Introduction
Founded in 1987, Buddhist Wai Yan Memorial College is the 11th government aided
co-education secondary school sponsored by the Hong Kong Buddhist Association.
It is also the first school on Cheung Chau Island set up by a Buddhist
sponsoring body. To commemorate the good deeds of the late Reverend Wai Yan of
Macau Po Chai Monastery, the school was named in his honour and it pays tribute
to his contributions to education and the community.
Highlights
The school adheres to the teaching of five virtues and the philosophy of
Buddhist education. Our school ethos is simplicity, embracing discipline with
counseling in order to develop in each student the essence of self-discipline
and self-respect. In S.1 to S.5 we adopt the co-form teachers system and there
are two Moral and Civic Education lessons cross each form level. To cater for
learners diversities, we conduct enhancement and remedial split classes in
Chinese, English, Mathematics and Liberal Studies. To widen studentsˇ¦
perspective and their learning experience, the Life-wide Learning Experience Day
and S.6 Cross Border Excursion Tour are held each year.
New Senior Secondary Curriculum
We aim at an extensive and balanced NSS curriculum, offering 10 elective
subjects and applied learning courses. For other learning experiences, regular
lessons are timetabled for civic education, sports, community service and
vocational training. Besides, Studentsˇ¦ Learning Portfolios are also in place
this school year.
External support
The Parent-Teacher Association sponsors our whole-school King of Reading Scheme.
The school receives HK$2 millions to implement the English Enhancement Scheme
and extra funding for conducting the P.A.T.H.S. programme.
School & Students Outstanding Performances
In the inter-school Hong Kong Historical and Cultural Studies Competitions, our
students achieved excellent results over the years: once first-runner-up, twice
second-runner-up and four times merits. This year, our students won the
Championship in the junior section of the same competition. Law Sek Yu (S.7S)
and Lam Wai Man (S.7S) both won the Merits Prizes in the Outlying Island Schools
Outstanding Students Award Scheme.
