In 1949, the Hong Kong Buddhist Association established a primary school
in Wanchai, taking the lead to provide free education to the children who
cannot afford to go to school after the Second World War. Because of the
restructuring of the Wanchai District in the 1960's, the site was planned
by the government to redevelop into a commercial zone. The Association
then founded a new school in Wah Fu Estate named "Buddhist Chung Wah
School" in 1970. However, with the drop of student numbers in the area by
1986, the government planned to change the school into a Language
Institute. Under the negotiation with the government, a new school site
was offered in Quarry Bay.
Our school was formally established in 1986 and occupies a total area of
4,000 square meters. It is next to the Quarry Bay Country Park and big
estates such as Kornhill Gardens and Nan Fung Sun Chuen. It is a
well-established bi-sessional government aided school adopting multi-media
teaching methods.
The school designs a curriculum alongside the new educational trends
catering for the full development of the children in moral, intellectual,
physical, social and aesthetic aspects. Buddhist philosophies are
assimilated into civic education to promote well discipline and school
ethos. In the past three years, the results the students have attained in
the HK Attainment Test have been above average territory wide. The
curriculum is further supported by extra-curricular activities that help
develop students' potentials and creativeness. In external competitions
the students have made outstanding achievements in dancing, singing, verse
speaking and gardening.
